While the demands can be overwhelming t is important to remember that prioritising personal health is not a luxury - it’s essential for sustaining both family and career responsibilities.
Challenges to health
Scarcity of time is one of the biggest challenges working moms have to deal with. Between early mornings and late nights, self-care often gets deprioritised and slips to the bottom of the list. However, even small, consistent habits can make a meaningful difference. Short bursts of physical activity like a 20-minute walk, stretching between tasks or opting for stairs can help maintain fitness without requiring a full workout session. The goal is not perfection but consistency.
Nutrition is another aspect of health that often gets compromised. Skipping meals or relying on convenience foods may seem unavoidable, but a little planning goes a long way. Preparing simple, balanced meals ahead of time or keeping healthy snacks like fruits, nuts, and yogurt within reach can help maintain energy levels throughout the day. Staying hydrated is equally important.
Also often overlooked is sleep which is frequently sacrificed. In fact, it plays a critical role in overall well-being. Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to fatigue, irritability and weakened immunity. While uninterrupted sleep may not always be possible, creating a calming bedtime routine, limiting screen time before bed and aiming for consistent sleep schedules can improve sleep quality.
Mental health deserves just as much attention as physical health. The pressure to “do it all” can lead to stress, guilt and burnout. It’s important for working moms to acknowledge these feelings and not suppress them. Taking short breaks, practising mindfulness or simply spending a few quiet minutes alone can help reset the mind. A support system of family, friends or colleagues can also provide emotional relief and practical help.
Setting realistic expectations is also key. Trying to excel in every role simultaneously can be exhausting and unsustainable. Learning to prioritise tasks, delegate when possible and accept that not everything will be perfect can significantly reduce stress. It’s okay to ask for help, whether at home or at work.
Importantly, working mothers should not overlook regular health check-ups. Preventive care often gets postponed due to busy schedules, but early detection of health issues can save time, stress and complications later. Scheduling appointments in advance can help ensure they aren’t missed.
Finally, self-compassion is a must. Many working moms hold themselves to incredibly high standards, often accompanied by guilt—either for not spending enough time at work or not being fully present at home. It is crucial to realise that doing one’s best is enough.
