Newborn Care Tips for First-Time Indian Parents

The joy of parenthood

Every time a child is born, parents are born as well. This is no doubt a joyous occasion, but for first-time parents, it can also feel a little overwhelming. From feeding and bathing to ensuring proper sleep, every little detail seems important. Indian households, with their rich traditions and family involvement, often bring both support and confusion for new parents. Let’s take a look at a few practical newborn care tips that bring together modern medical advice with cultural sensitivity and put new parents at ease.

Feeding Your Baby

For the first six months, exclusive breastfeeding is recommended by doctors. Mother’s milk provides essential nutrients and antibodies that boost the baby’s immunity. However new mothers often face challenges like latching issues or low milk supply. But guidance from a paediatrician or lactation consultant can help. If breastfeeding isn’t possible for any reason, formula milk prescribed by the doctor is a safe alternative. Avoid honey, cow’s milk, or other traditional feeds for infants, as these may cause infections or allergies.

Bathing and Hygiene

Many traditional practices are rife in Indian households such as oil massage before bathing a baby. Gentle massage with coconut or mustard oil helps strengthen muscles and improve circulation. Bathing should be done with lukewarm water and mild baby soap. Initially, sponge baths are safer until the umbilical cord stump falls off. Always keep baby clothes, towels, and nappies clean to prevent infections.

Sleep and Comfort

Most newborns sleep 14–17 hours a day, but usually not in one go. It is normal to expect irregular patterns of waking and sleeping, especially at night. It is recommended to always place your baby on their back while sleeping to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). In Indian households, babies often sleep with elders – but certain precautions need to be taken such as ensuring the baby has enough space and isn’t at risk of suffocation. Using a firm mattress and avoiding heavy blankets is safer.

Vaccinations and Medical Care

Newborn care is incomplete without vaccinations. In India, immunisation begins right after birth and continues as per the National Immunisation Schedule. Keep a record of all shots and consult your paediatrician regularly for growth monitoring. Avoid relying solely on home remedies for health concerns; medical advice should be your first choice in case of fever, diarrhoea or difficulty in breathing.

Handling Family Advice

In India most families are big extended ones and there is no lack of well-meant advice from relatives and acquaintances. Indian parents often receive a flood of suggestions, ranging from applying kajal to giving herbal concoctions. While these suggestions are well meant, not all are scientifically safe. It is okay to politely decline practices that might harm your baby. Rely on verified medical advice and balance it with safe, comforting traditions like lullabies, swaddling and gentle rocking.

Self-Care for Parents

While a happy phase of life, caring for a newborn can be exhausting. First-time parents in their zeal to do their best for the baby often neglect their own rest and nutrition. Sharing responsibilities, seeking help from family members and practicing patience are important. A calm and healthy parent can nurture a healthy baby better any day.

Embark on the magical journey

The first few months of parenthood can be blissful and exhausting at the same time. Marked by a mix of sleepless nights, endless diaper changes and heartwarming smiles these are the days that remain etched in one’s memory forever. For Indian parents, balancing modern paediatric advice with family traditions is the key.
