Nephro-Urological Disorders in Children: An overview
Among the diseases afflicting children are a range of conditions affecting the kidneys and urinary system. These disorders are not to be taken lightly as they can adversely impact a child's health, development, and quality of life. The key to effectively treating these disorders is early detection and management.
The common disorders affecting children
There are various kinds of nephro-urological issues affecting children. But the ones generally encountered more are:
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): A common nephro-urological issue in children, UTIs are characterised by symptoms like frequent urination, painful urination, and abdominal discomfort. A course of antibiotics is a must to prevent complications.
- Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR): In this disorder, urine flows backward from the bladder to the kidneys. The repercussions of this are recurrent UTIs and potential kidney damage. For a proper diagnosis ultrasound and voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) is usually required and treatment may include medication or even surgery in severe cases.
- Congenital Anomalies: Sometimes the disorders are inborn such as when children are born with structural abnormalities in their urinary system. These abnormalities can include hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidney due to urine buildup) or horseshoe kidneys. It is crucial to detect these early through prenatal ultrasound for effective treatment.
- Nephrotic Syndrome: The symptoms of this kidney disorder are high protein levels in urine, low protein levels in blood, swelling, and increased cholesterol levels. Effective treatment involves the use of corticosteroids while carefully monitoring the child’s health.
- Kidney Stones: Kidney stones, while not so common in young children can still occur at times. Its symptoms include severe abdominal pain, blood in urine, and nausea. Treatment will usually involve hydration, pain management, and sometimes surgery, depending on the size of the stones.
Dealing with Nephro-Urological Disorders in Children
Nephro-Urological Disorders in children require a multidisciplinary approach that involves paediatricians, nephrologists and urologists. Timely intervention is paramount and can be ensured by spreading awareness and education among parents and caregivers. This apart, regular check-ups and a focus on hydration and proper hygiene is equally important as it will ultimately lead to better kidney and urinary health in children.
